PARROT SNAKE Leptophis ahaetulla


A slender snake with a long, narrow head and keeled scales. Usually bright green, but variable. There may be a black line passing through the eye, but this is sometimes missing. Also, the flanks may be marked with yellow or brown. It opens its mouth widely when threatened.

Size To 2 m.

Distribution Tropical Central America and much of South America.

Habitat Wet or dry forests. Usually in trees or shrubs.

Food Lizards, birds and small mammals.

Bre e ding Egg-laying.

Note s There are 6 other species, all similar in appearance, but this is the most widespread and common.
